I visited Vilcabamba many times during the two years I lived in Loja. I always had my cameras with me and in fact, many of the trips to Vilcabamba were specifically to take photos. It is common to see coffee beans drying on footpaths or really any flat surface around town. Coffee is grown in the mountains surrounding Vilcabamba and the neighboring town of Malacatos.
In this day and age of smartphones and selfies, a black and white film photograph of a scene like this is a rare piece of art. It will convey a sense of culture and nostalgia wherever you display it. I recommend an off white mat and a dark grey wooden frame to balance, but not detract, from the photo. The smaller sized prints of the buildings in Vilcabamba work well in a series along a hallway, or a vertical stack in an entryway. No matter how you display them, they will start conversations and people will ask about your time in the valley of Vilcabamba, Ecuador.
This is a 35mm black and white film photo that was developed by hand and then scanned at a high resolution with a Plustek OpticFilm 8100 dedicated 35mm film scanner. The scan quality is detailed enough to capture all the grain and nuances of the film and transfer it to this high quality photographic print.
The photo was taken with a Canonet QL17 and a screw-on orange filter. No photoshop or AI was used in post production.
